The Blood Center offers ’12 Days of Giving’ to blood donors

Posted by Paul Adams on December 20, 2016 2:10 PM

The Blood Center partners with sixteen area businesses for ’12 Days of Giving’ now through New Year’s Eve to increase blood donations during the holidays. Every donor who gives blood now through Dec. 31 is entered to win prizes ranging from diner or a game of Laser tag, to a trip down the Mississippi on the Steamboat Natchez or two nights at one of six area hotels.

“Blood donations go down during the holidays and the need often increases” says Paul Adams, Public Relations Manager for The Blood Center. “Currently we only have about a third of the blood and blood components we need for the patients and hospitals in our community.”

Each day The Blood Center will pull a handful of lucky donors that have donated during the promotion. Donors should give early to stabilize the blood supply, but early donations also increase the odds of winning as the donation pool grows.

12 Days of Giving is made possible thanks to gifts from Adventure Quest Laser Tag, Area 51 Laser Tag, Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, The Cheesecake Factory, Fisher & Sons Jewelers, Global Wildlife Center, Greyline New Orleans, Harrah’s Gulf Coast, Hotel Monteleone, Laser Tag of Metairie, Mignon Faget, New Orleans Harley-Davidson, New Orleans School of Cooking, Omni Riverfront Hotel, Outback Steakhouse, Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, South Beach Biloxi Hotel & Suites, and Trey Yuen Cuisine of China.

The Blood Center, a nonprofit organization led by a volunteer Board of Trustees, is the primary supplier of blood and blood components to more than 30 area hospitals and outpatient facilities throughout Southeast Louisiana and Southern Mississippi. The Blood Center operates 14 donor centers in the Gulf South.

Every type is the right type, and while 60% of the population is eligible to donate blood, less than 5% does it. To maintain a healthy and stable community blood supply, The Blood Center must collect between 300 to 350 pints of blood every day.

Blood is traditionally in short supply during the holidays, yet the demand for blood and blood components is constant. For more information on blood donation, please call (800) 86-BLOOD or visit TheBloodCenter.org. Find The Blood Center on social media at @TheBloodCenter.
